Two Findings on Cage from a Historical Time

John Cage’s impact on the music of post-war Europe has already been the subject of extensive research and is now a generally accepted historical fact. The situation is wholly different when we deal with the consequences of Cage’s work for the avant-garde in Eastern Europe. His visits to Leningrad (1988) and East Berlin (1990) offer a promising starting point, as the composer and researcher Jakob Ullmann here proves, for they open up perspectives not only for a Cage reception in the “East”, but also a reception of the “East” in Cage’s work.
