THE BOATSWAIN’S MATE


Ethel Smyth komponierte ihre Oper The Boatswain’s Mate kurz vor dem ersten Weltkrieg in Ägypten. Die komische Oper – es geht um eine selbstständige Kneipenwirtin in einem Londoner Vorort, die von einem Verehrer hereingelegt werden soll, den Spiess aber dann umdreht – ist voller musikalischer (Stil-)Zitate: Von irischen Balladen, die Smyth kurz zuvor auf einer Irlandreise von irischen Arbeiterinnen und Arbeitern hörte, über Stilzitate aus Richard Strauss‘ Rosenkavalier, den sie während der Komposition für das Magazin «The Suffragette» rezensierte, bis zum Selbstzitat ihres March of the Women, den sie als Kampflied für die Suffragettenbewegung komponiert hatte.
