Every Day is a Good Day
John Cage in Darmstadt
Michael Rebhahn
John Cage’s appearance at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music in 1958 triggered one of the most profound polarisations in recent Western music history. Some fought him as a charlatan and a serious danger to the very idea of European music while others celebrated him as a Messiah and declared the begging of a new era,
post Cagei adventum. The equanimity that in fact also emanated from the generally good-humoured Cage in Darmstadt was somewhat overlooked.
