John Cage’s appearance at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music in 1958 triggered one of the most profound polarisations in recent Western music history. Some fought him as a charlatan and a serious danger to the very idea of European music while others celebrated him as a Messiah and declared the begging of a new era, post Cagei adventum. The equanimity that in fact also emanated from the generally good-humoured Cage in Darmstadt was somewhat overlooked.
