The new spirit of networks
On the development of artistic work
Martine Azam
In artistic milieux of all kinds, actors have known since the dawn of ages the importance of interpersonal relationships. The novelty of the last decades is not so much the existence of networks than the transition from informal to formal networks. Inspired by the libertarian ideas of the 60ies and 70ies, the network has become the dominant new form of organisation in all spheres. Supported by politics, and in a context of stark competition between artistic projects, this type of organisation potentially modifies the work of artists as well as the creative process itself.
