Musical Interpretation as an Object of Study

Interpretation Research in Swiss German Music Universities

Mathias Spohr
Research has not yet become altogether
a matter of course at the universities of
music. After a first phase of consolidation,
the strategies of differentiation
among the various institutions have
become more and more visible. Research
on interpretation and performance plays
a role to a greater or lesser degree at all
music universities. Spohr describes the
various approaches to it, offering several
examples, and shows how this practiceoriented
research differs from the traditions
of (German) academic musicology.
